Punishments are a recurring element in Hell's Kitchen.
Overview[]
Whenever a team loses, Ramsay subjects them to punishment while the winning team goes on a reward.
Recurring punishments[]
Prepping items[]
If a challenge that required prepping was held, or Ramsay is about to do a special dish for dinner service, the team is required to prep that item before service.
Dish duty[]
Depending on the challenge, Ramsay will have the team clean up the kitchens and washing the dishes.
Delivery Day[]
One of the most dreaded punishments in the show. The losing team must take in deliveries for the restaurant from the truck down to the kitchen. It’s also important that they pay attention to the invoice for the correct number of items, and the exact items needed.
Clean-up duty[]
It depends on what the situation entails. If the dining room or front entrance was dirtied up during a team challenge or event, Ramsay will have the team clean the mess up. Or in general, Ramsay will have them clean the front entrance for spring cleaning.
At some points, Ramsay will have the team clean the dorms as well.
In Season 4, Ramsay forced both teams to clean up their respective kitchens after elimination as he refused to leave them a mess overnight.[1]
Disgusting lunches[]
During the punishment, the Sous Chefs provide the team with lunches, but they are not supposed to be delicious. They are either mixtures of ingredients that were not used, or thematic from the challenge (for example, the red team in Season 15 lost the Duck Challenge, so their punishment was eating duck feet sandwiches).
Decorating for an event[]
Whether an event is held at Hell’s Kitchen, the losing team must decorate the dining room as per the instructions of the maître d', or the event manager.
Sorting through trash[]
This punishment has the chefs sort through the trash in Hell’s Kitchen, and separate it into recyclables, compost, and trash. If a challenge was held at an off-site location, Ramsay will bring in the location’s trash for the chefs to sort along with the restaurant's.
In Seasons 2 and 4, Ramsay had both teams sort through the trash after opening night as a lesson to show how much food was wasted.[2] [3] He was also going to do it in Season 5, but ultimately, they did not have the time to do so.[4]
Community Service[]
More of a rewarding punishment. This has the chef’s work for an organization for a day which can include picking up trash from a ravine, green work, or prep items for a local shelter.
Moving Day[]
A punishment that is reserved for near the end of the season. The losing chefs were forced to send out all the unneeded furniture out of the dorms and onto a moving truck.
Punishment Pass[]
The Punishment Pass in its glass casing in Season 18.
Introduced in Season 18, the Punishment Pass is a one-time use advantage. The wielder of this can excuse themselves from punishment and join the winning team on their reward. A chef can keep a Pass up until the black jacket phase, which will then expire for said person. In Season 19, Ramsay updated the power to the Punishment Pass by allowing the user to swap places with someone from the winning team, therefore forcing that person to do the punishment in their place.[5] That means that if the losing team had a teammate with a Pass, both teams must be present when Ramsay announced the reward and punishment. Beginning with Season 20, Ramsay awarded a Pass to the best dishes from the red and blue teams.[6][7]
Design[]
In Season 18, the Punishment Pass was a standard golden colored card encased in a glass case. If the wielder chose to use it at any time, they could break the casing and free the card.
In Season 19, the Punishment Pass resembled a giant playing card that was encased in ice. Like in Season 18, the wielder could break the ice to free the card if they want to use the Pass.
In Season 20, the Punishment Pass was a small steel card with the title, HK Logo, and fire hollowed out. Unlike the previous two seasons, the card was not encased in something. Although there were two wielders that held a pass, there was only one copy due to the last minute decision.
In Season 21, there were two copies of the Punishment Pass and both resembled gold bars with chains on them. This allowed the wielders to wear them when the reward and punishments were announced. Season 22 had a similar design, but the front was painted to resemble the American flag, due to the American Dream theme the season had.
Season 23 continues of having similar design, but with the front had a cover with the text etched in golden color.
