The Multi-Way Cooking Challenge is a recurring challenge from Hell's Kitchen.

Overview[]

This particular challenge featured two variants.

The first variant used was having both teams work in pairs on the same four cooks of proteins Ramsay assigned. Once time was up, Ramsay judged each pair's attempts and awarded them a point for any cook he found acceptable. The team with the most points at the end was declared the winner.

The second variant used was having the chefs start the challenge with the knowledge of what protein they were cooking with and the multiple ways they could cook it. After cooking their dishes, the teams would go head to head on the cooking method used. If Ramsay likes the dish, he will give it a point. The team with the most points at the end was declared the winner.

The purpose of this challenge is to test the team's ability to use different cooking methods with a single protein.

History[]

Season 7[]

Episode 2 was the first time the challenge was used and it happened when there were fifteen chefs left, eight on the blue team and seven on the red team. Known as the Egg Relay Challenge, the chefs had five minutes to cook four egg dishes per Ramsay's standards. These included poached, sunny-side-up, soft boiled, and scrambled. Each team worked in pairs, but Siobhan from the red team cooked alone as they were down a member. The blue team won the challenge 11-10. They were rewarded with a helicopter tour of Los Angeles and lunch with Ramsay on top of a building. The red team took in a delivery of giant tuna and prepped it for dinner service.[1]

Season 9[]

Season 9 had two different variants of the challenge used.

Episode 2 (Meat & Grilling Challenge)[]

Episode 2 happened when there were sixteen chefs left, nine on the red team and seven on the blue team. Known as the Meat & Grilling Challenge, Ramsay gave the chefs twenty minutes to grill four different meat products to varying temperatures for that challenge, including a medium-rare New York strip, a medium ribeye, a medium-well filet mignon, and a well-done burger. The teams split off into pairs, but because of the imbalance of teams, the red team had a trio of Jennifer, Gina, and Elizabeth working together. In contrast, Will from the blue team cooked alone. The blue team won the challenge 11-10, and they were rewarded with lunch on the top of Palm Springs with Ramsay. The red team cleaned the grills, took in a delivery of a whole cow, and drank glasses of the meat used in the challenge.[2]

Episode 4 (Chicken Creation Challenge)[]

Episode 4 happened when 14 chefs were remaining, 7 on both teams. Known as the Chicken Creation Challenge, Ramsay had the chefs grab chickens from a pen to gather their ingredients. Then, they had 30 minutes to cook a chicken dish that was cooked in four different ways; fried, sautéed, grilled, and roasted. Both teams worked in pairs for this challenge, but due to the odd numbers on both teams, Paul and Jamie cooked by themselves. Jen Garcia, from People magazine, and Dave Karger, from Entertainment Weekly magazine, were invited as guest judges. Paul beat the pair of Carrie and Gina on the fried round, while the pairs of Jennifer and Krupa and Jonathon and Will tied on the sautéed round. After, Jamie beat the pair of Tommy and Monterray on the grilled round, and the pair of Elise and Elizabeth beat the pair of Chino and Natalie on the roasted round. The red team won the challenge 3-2, and they went go-karting at K1 Speed. The blue team had to make chicken stock for the following service.[3]

Season 18[]

On Episode 5, the challenge happened when 14 chefs were remaining, 7 on both teams. Known as the Seven-Way Cooking Challenge, both teams had 45 minutes to cook a halibut dish that was cooked in seven different ways; steamed, wood-burning oven-baked, grilled, poached, hot smoked, pan-seared, and shallowed fried. David Lefevre was invited as a guest judge. Gizzy won the grilled round over Bret, and Mia beat Chris on the steamed round. Kevin scored over Roe on the poached round, while Kanae beat Scotley on the hot smoked round. Then, both Ariel and Jose tied on the shallowed fried round, and Motto scored over Heather on the pan-seared round. Finally, T scored on the wood-burning oven baked over Trev, and the blue team won the challenge 5-3. They went on a VR experience at VR Territory and received Vitamix blenders, while the red team participated in compost day.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Season 9 is the only season to use both variants.
  • The blue team won this challenge the most in three seasons (Seasons 7, 9 (the first time the challenge was used), and 18).
