The eighteen new chefs arrived at Hell's Kitchen, where Marino awaited them. The chefs entered Hell's Kitchen and noticed the past winners from each season before entering the dining room. To give the chefs some inspiration, Ramsay decided to have them walk through the famous doors and have a taste of what it felt like to win. As they did so, Mattias wanted to walk through the doors to show his family that he had gone through hell to make it. Afterwards, the chefs got to know each other before the Sous Chefs arrived, explaining how their time in the competition helped their careers. Afterwards, a guitar player appeared and played the national anthem as four other doors appeared behind the curtain, each figure explaining their journey for the American Dream. After Ramsay stepped out, he welcomed the chefs to the twenty-second season, where they were celebrating the American Dream. Ramsay said the three celebrities the chefs saw were proof of the American Dream and that Hell's Kitchen was part of the American Dream. Ramsay said the winner of that season would become his Head Chef at Hell's Kitchen in Caesars Las Vegas with a salary of $250,000. Then, Ramsay told the chefs that their Signature Dish Challenge was about to begin.
During the Signature Dish Challenge, Mattias was the final person from the blue team to have his dish judged by Ramsay, and he went up against Donya. He felt nervous going up last as his dish could either win it for the men or lose it. He presented his filet mignon with purple carrot chorizo and poblano hash. The steak had a perfect medium rare cook and sear, but Ramsay noticed burned chorizo on the plate. After tasting the dish, Ramsay told him that while the dish had the makings of four, he was getting three points for the burned garnish. The blue team lost the challenge after a 29-point tie. They were punished by participating in delivery day and cleaning up both kitchens.[1]
Before the Creative Scallops Challenge, Mattias saw other things in the blue box besides the scallops and knew things would get messy quickly. During the cooking, he said he had never shucked one before and shanked a couple of his first attempts. Still, he got his third attempt accepted. He lost the challenge as his dish was not chosen for the top three.
During dinner service, Mattias was at the appetizer station with Ryan. At one point, he and Ryan tried to communicate with Jason, but the latter ignored them. Both teams were named joint losers and asked to nominate two each. During deliberation, he said Jason was no better than Tad and Brad on meat, and he and Ryan brought up the raw lobster tails the former served. Jason denied serving anything wrong that night, which bothered him as Tad and Brad took responsibility and said they had integrity. He went off on Jason for not owning up to his mistakes, but the latter brushed them off.
He was not nominated for elimination.[2]
Episode 3[]

During the American Citizen Brunch Service Challenge, Mattias was at the meat station with Jermaine. He said he would never hear the end of it at home if he served improperly cooked steaks. As Johnathan walked the steaks up, Ramsay had a quick touch and sternly told Mattias not to serve cold steaks again. Jason felt Mattias could not cook to save his life, but he served a warm refire. The blue team won the challenge and was rewarded with a Los Angeles-styled pool party at the Godfrey Hotel with a lunch catered by Craig’s. During the reward, he said he would never get a meal like that back home, while Brad found a cooked piece of chicken on his plate. He jokingly asked Brad if he cooked it, making the men laugh.
During dinner service, Mattias was at the meat station with Jermaine. He had confidence that the men could follow through on their challenge victory and wanted that night to be the start of their dominance. However, his pan caught fire, and Ramsay was forced to move it off the stovetop and into the sink. Ramsay told him to slow down, and he did not want the former to see him in a negative light. As the men worked on Victor Cruz’s order, he had Jermaine send up his chicken. However, it was raw, and Ramsay told him off for serving it for an NFL legend. Seeing that no one was helping him, Johnathan decided to jump in and help him out by coaching him on the cook. Later, he had Johnathan walk up his refire, but it turned out to be burnt at the bottom. He was unhappy that he served a burnt chicken, and Ramsay threatened him with elimination if he did not get it together. Ryan was not pleased with his poor performance, but his third attempt was accepted, and Cruz got his order. Then, he and Jermaine stammered on timings before serving a blue steak and discovered a broken Wellington. Having had enough, Ramsay kicked the blue team out of the kitchen.
Both teams were named joint losers and asked to nominate two each. During deliberation, Mattias was upset by his poor performance and knew he deserved to be nominated. Jason asked Jermaine who was firing most of the proteins that night, and the latter explained that he worked on most of the meat while he did the Wellingtons. Johnathan felt Jermaine let him fall that night and commented that he tried to help him when the former did not.
Mattias was the blue team's first nominee for elimination, with Brad as the second. They were joined by Donya and Claudia from the red team. During his plea, he said he was a fighter and wanted to own up to his mistakes that night to bounce back. However, Ramsay snarkily told him that he had made many mistakes to learn from. He survived elimination, and while being dismissed, he was happy to stay, but he knew Ramsay was watching him.[3]
Episode 4[]

Before dismissing the chefs, Ramsay warned Mattias that he was on thin ice, and he could hear the cracking. Still, he knew he could bounce back as Ramsay kept him for a reason, and he wanted to prove the latter he did not regret it.
During the American Classics Challenge, Mattias went up against Raneisha. He picked an H, and their dish was pizza. He said he cooked pizza daily and claimed his body was 80% pizza. During the cooking, he deemed his pizza a redemption pie and knew his dish would be a winner. He was the seventh person to have his dish judged by Ramsay, and he presented his braised tomato pizza. He said it was his time to shine, and an impressed Ramsay him back. He scored over Raneisha and the blue team won the challenge 7-6. They were rewarded with a trip to Santa Barbara with parasailing and dinner at the Hotel Milo. During the reward, he felt he was on cloud nine while parasailing. Later, he agreed with Dahmere's statement about getting up there thanks to cooking, as he had been told all his life to do something other than cooking.
During dinner service, Mattias was at the fish station with Johnathan. He felt rejuvenated and was ready to fight, but he served a cold lobster tail. Despite the rough start, Johnathan was ready to bounce back and help him get off the thin ice. However, his second attempt came out raw, and Ramsay slammed it into his chest after showing it to him. The men were forced to restart the order, and Devon got annoyed as he tried to lead him to success. Still, the refired appetizers were accepted. The blue team lost the service, and they were asked to nominate two people for elimination. During deliberation, Jermaine asked who had food sent back that night, and he and Jason raised their hands. Jermaine nominated him and Ryan for elimination, with the former reminding him about the raw lobster. While he acknowledged the two raw lobsters he had served, he thought he had bounced back from slight mistakes. Then, he and Johnathan discussed how Ramsay chewed Jason out for smirking during a rant, but the latter denied it. He got annoyed by Jason's attitude as he felt the latter was a line cook with an ego.
Mattias was the blue team's first nominee for elimination, with Jason as the second. During his plea, Ramsay asked him what happened with the raw lobsters. He admitted that he brought it early, but he bounced back and felt he was getting stronger. Also, he said he was a better teammate than Jason, though the latter said the same thing. He was eliminated for the raw lobster tails and showing no improvement in the first three services. During his exit interview, he felt he did not deserve to go home as he was a better chef than Jason, but he owned up to the mistakes he made and felt upset he was leaving a loser.[4]
Ramsay's comment: "Mattias has had three services to impress me. Unfortunately, he struck out."

Quotes[]
- "Back home, I cook pizza on a literal daily basis. I would safely say I'm 20% water and 80% pizza."
- (After being eliminated) "I feel like the wrong person went home. No matter how much more experience on paper he has than me, I think I’m still a better chef than he’ll ever be. I showed that I’m bouncing back. But at the end of the day, I did make the mistakes I made. I gotta own up to that. This is a life-changing opportunity for me, and, uh, I just I wanted to come home a winner."
