The Jacket Challenge is a recurring challenge in Hell's Kitchen.
Overview[]
Always done in the team format, Ramsay would give the chefs new jackets that have some recipes on the back. To figure out what the dish was, the chef would ask their teammate to read the instructions to them. After cooking their dish, Ramsay would judge each dish based on how well it was cooked, along with if the exact instructions were followed and will award a point to the chef if they met the standards. The team with the most points would be the winner.
The purpose of this challenge is to test the chefs' communication skills, which would hopefully lead to dinner services, as well as correctly making the dish to the exact recipe.
History[]
Season 13[]
In episode 3, the challenge happened for the first time, when 16 chefs were remaining, with 8 on both teams. The dishes that were cooked in the challenge were enchiladas, frittata, Shepard's Pie, burger, lobster spring rolls, lettuce wraps, spaghetti & meatballs, and empanadas. The blue team won the challenge 6-4, and they were rewarded with a trip to the Venice Beach boardwalk, a zip line experience, and lunch on top of the Erwin Hotel. The red team was punished by taking deliveries of 500 pounds of coffee, grinding them by hand, and prepping both kitchens for the next service.[1]
Season 15[]
In episode 3, the challenge happened when 16 chefs were remaining, with 8 on both teams. The dishes that were cooked in the challenge were spanakopita, sliders, taquitos, fish sandwiches, Philly cheesesteak, spaghetti carbonara, eggplant parmesan, and an unknown dish. Due to some communication mistakes from the red team, the blue team won the challenge 5-3. They were rewarded with a trip to Santa Barbara, where they received massages and Mojito cocktails, while the red team was punished by prepping sea bass for the next service and eating a fish head soup.[2]
Season 20[]
In episode 5, this challenge happened with 14 chefs remaining, with 7 on both teams. Known as the Emoji Jacket Challenge, the chefs had to decipher their emojis to identify the foods they were cooking along with the processes. The dishes that were cooked in the challenge were fried chicken sandwich, hamburger and fries, fish and chips, eggplant parmesan, crab cakes, Philly cheesesteak, and spaghetti and meatballs. The red team won the challenge 4-2, where they were rewarded with a ride in the Linq High Roller Ferris Wheel, along with lunch at the Chayo Mexican Restaurant and a mechanical bull-riding experience. The blue team was punished by cleaning the Eiffel Tower restaurant, while wearing French maid aprons.[3]
