The Ingredient Spelling Challenge is a recurring team challenge in Hell's Kitchen.

Overview[]

In some situations, Ramsay will give both teams a chance to spell out ingredients until they have a certain amount. They then had to cook their own dishes using the ingredients their teammates spelled out. Afterwards, Ramsay would taste each dish from one team at a time. The team with the most points at the end wins.

This challenge is another test of the chefs' ability to create dishes with random ingredients, while also testing their spelling abilities when acquiring ingredients they want.

History[]

Season 15[]

Episode 6 marked the first time the challenge happened. It happened when there were 12 chefs left, with 6 on both teams. Known as the Shopping Cart Challenge, both teams had to spell out their ingredients with the shopping carts with a time limit of 10 minutes, and after, they had one minute to grab a personal ingredient. Once back at Hell's Kitchen, the chefs cooked their own dishes using the ingredients provided that would be judged on a 1-5 scale. The red team won the tiebreaker at 22 each, and they were rewarded with a day in stunt planes, while the blue team had to prep ingredients for sangrias which included peeling apples and grapes.[1]

Season 16[]

In episode 6, the challenge happened when there were 13 chefs left, with 7 on the red team, and 6 on the blue team. Known as the Ingredient Crossword Challenge, both teams had to spell out their ingredients on a giant scrabble board with a time limit of 5 minutes. The red team received chicken, carrot, lime, beans, and turnip, but lost snap peas as it was not spelled out properly. The blue team received ribeye, crab, yam, bacon, onion, okra, and peas. Then, the chefs had tp cook their own dishes using the ingredients provided that would be judged on a 1-5 scale, though because the red team had an extra person, Aziza voluntarily sat out. In the end, the blue team won the challenge 17-16, and they were rewarded with a bumper car experience on ice, and eating a steak dinner, while the red team had to help Marino with his chores towards Family Night which included inflating balloons, resetting the dining room, organizing crayons, and baking a special batch of cookies for the kids.[2]

Season 17[]

In episode 4, the challenge happened when there were 14 chefs left, with 7 on each team. Known as the Chance Challenge, both teams had to guess an ingredient based on the letter that was on screen, and if one team stumbled on a word, they would lose that round. The winner of each guessing round got to choose the best ingredient on the board while giving the losers the worst of the ingredients. The red team chose mushrooms, snap peas, asparagus, and rice and were given cantaloupe, peanut butter, and blueberries, while the blue team won cauliflower, portabella mushrooms, and bacon and were given maraschino cherries, syrup, artichoke, and raisins. After that, the chefs had to cook their own dish using those ingredients that would be judged on a 1-5 scale. In the end, the red team won the challenge 26-25 and were rewarded with a private jet trip to Santa Barbara to stay at the Belmond El Encanto resort, while the blue team had to deal with delivery of potatoes and then sifted through garbage to find what was recyclable.[3]

Season 19[]

In episode 11, the challenge happened when there were 7 chefs left, 4 on the red team, and 3 on the blue team. Known as the Spells Kitchen Challenge, one chef from each team had to go up and unscramble a word that was an ingredient. The winner of that ingredient could either keep it for their team or send it to the other team to sabotage them. Afterward, both teams had to cook three dishes using ribeye, halibut, and veal chop. Because the red team had an extra person, Mary Lou and Nikki cooked their own halibut dishes, but the latter dropped her dish before judging. Both Amber and Kori tied on the ribeye round, and Declan and Jordan on the veal chop round. However, Cody scored on the halibut round over Mary Lou, and the blue team won the challenge 3-2. The blue team went a pool day at the Link and an all-American barbecue lunch while also receiving brand new Vitamix blenders. However, they could not enjoy the pool as a lightning storm hit them. The red team was forced to make 600 twilled cookies.[4]

Season 20[]

In episode 9, the challenge happened when there were 10 chefs left, with 5 on each team. As in the previous season, it was known as the Spells Kitchen Challenge. One chef from each team had to go up and unscramble a word that was an ingredient. The winner of that ingredient could either keep it for their team or send it to the other team to sabotage them. Afterward, both teams had to cook three dishes using ribeye, sea bass, and veal chop. They had to cook two of each protein, and each dish that Ramsay deemed satisfactory scored a point. On the ribeye round, while Antonio's dish earned a point for the red team, Trenton's and Megan's dishes scored a point each, giving the blue team a lead. On the sea bass round, while Brynn's dish earned a point for the red team, Victoria's and Emily's dishes scored a point each, extending the blue team’s lead. On the veal chop round, while Sam's dish earned a point for the red team, Steve's and the blue team's dishes scored a point each, and the blue team won the challenge 6-3. The blue team spent the day relaxing in a hot tub while the red team had to bake bread and churn butter by hand.[5]

Season 21[]

Episode 8 had it when there were eleven chefs left, six on the blue team and five on the red team. Known as the Game Meat Challenge, both teams cooked three game-themed meats: boar, duck, and venison. To pick their ingredients, the chefs participated in two game show related challenges to grab ingredients for their dishes, or send them to the opposing team. These two challenges were the unscramble game Spells Kitchen, and the picture guessing game Kitchen Sightmares. Afterwards, they had forty-five minutes to cook their dishes and paired up on the proteins. However, Sommer cooked alone as the red team was down a member. Before the judging, Ramsay asked both teams to pick one dish each from the three proteins they cooked. The red team went with Sommer by default, Dafne, and Cheyenne, while the blue team went with Sakari, Abe, and Brett. Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo were invited as guest judges. Sakari scored on the boar, while Sommer scored on the duck. Lastly, Cheyenne scored on the venison, and the red team won the challenge 2-1. They went to Lucky Stripes for bowling and had lunch provided by Vinny Dotolo and Jon Shook. The blue team pitted olives and made two pounds of olive tapenade and pesto. Alex used his Punishment Pass and swapped places with Tara.[6]
