The Farm Animal Challenge is a recurring challenge in Hell's Kitchen.
Overview[]
This challenge tests the chef’s ability to make dishes using proteins commonly found on a farm.
History[]
Season 11[]
Episode 8 was the first time the challenge occurred. It featured a challenge known as the Farm Animal Challenge. It happened when there were fourteen chefs left, seven on both teams. For that challenge, both teams had to go into an animal cage one at a time to herd an animal for starch. The proteins included turkey, pork, duck, goat, and lamb. Then, both teams had 40 minutes to cook a dish using the protein and starch they gathered. Because Ramsay would only judge five dishes, the red team sat out Cyndi and Jacqueline while the blue team sat out Jon and Dan. Jon Shook was invited as a guest judge. Nedra scored over Ray on the turkey round, and Susan scored on the duck round over Anthony. Then, Zach beat Mary on the lamb, and Barret won the pork round over Amanda. Lastly, Ja'Nel scored on the goat round over Michael, and the red team won the challenge 3-2. They went to the Aquarium of the Pacific as VIP guests while the blue team put a petting zoo pen together for Family Night.[1]
Season 13[]
Episode 6 had the challenge, known as the Barn Animal Challenge. It happened when there were thirteen chefs left, seven on the blue team and six on the red team. For the first part of the challenge, two pairs from each team herded an animal into a pen for a chop and a starch. These included lamb chop, pork chop, and veal chop. Then, both teams had thirty minutes to cook their own dish using one of the three chops. Before the judging, both teams had to pick three dishes to represent the proteins. The red team picked La Tasha, Sade, and Roe, while the blue team picked Fernando, Steve, and Sterling. John Shook and Vinny Dotolo came in as guest judges, and the trio scored each dish on a 1-5 scale, with 15 being the highest. La Tasha scored 11 over Fernando's ten on the veal chop round, while Sade scored ten over Steve's nine on the lamb chop. However, Sterling scored nine over Roe's four on the pork chop, and the blue team won the challenge 28-25. They went to the Santa Barbara wine country for wine tasting and lunch while the red team extracted bone marrow and made stock.[2]
Trivia[]
- Interestingly enough, both seasons featured a sat out dish that would have won the losing team the challenge had it been used.
