The eighth episode of Season 11 of Hell’s Kitchen aired on Fox on April 23, 2013. In that episode, a Family Night dinner service took place, one team served raw food to the staff's families, and one chef was extremely bothered by Ramsay's critics at elimination.

Intro[]

While going back to the dorms, Susan promised her teammates that she would never disappoint again. Dan knew that he could cook, and Zach warned his teammates that the latter's behavior would be worse than ever. Then, Zach wondered how Dan kept dodging bullets, thought that Ramsay could not have been further from the truth when he said that he could cook, and Jon knew that Dan dodged a bullet because they saved him. In the bedroom, Dan rubbed about how good he felt after Ramsay told him he could cook in front of everybody in Jon's face, asked if he would be taken more seriously from that moment on, and patted himself on the shoulder.

On the red side, Mary told Susan how glad she was about her still being there, both of them hugged, and Susan felt over the moon that she was still there. However, Susan admitted to her teammates that she had an abysmal performance, Nedra reminded her that somebody else would mess up. Susan could not wait to prove herself to her teammates that she deserved to be there. When the chefs went to bed, Dan was still rubbing his good performance in Barret's face, and Susan was glad that the day was over.

Team challenge[]

The following day, both teams went to the dining room, and Ramsay greeted them before taking them outside. Arrived outside, Ramsay revealed the freshest ingredients they would ever find, which were live animals in pen, and Mary was extremely excited to see farm animals before Ramsay told her not to get too much excited as they would not butcher them. However, Nedra revealed her animal phobia, to the point that she was scared of her own dog, and Ja'Nel acknowledged that the turkeys seemed mean. After, Ramsay introduced the Farm Animal Challenge, where each chef would go inside the pen to herd an animal to one of the cages labelling a starch, and after, create a dish using the protein and starch combination. Jon was confident as he spent time on a farm and thought it would be fun, and when the ten-minute countdown began, Ja'Nel and Dan entered the pen. The latter put his goat in the risotto cage while Ja'Nel put her goat in the polenta cage. When it was Nedra's turn to enter the pen, she was terrified but determined to do it. When Nedra entered the pen, she was so terrified that Susan told that it was the animals chasing Nedra. In the meantime, the men were running at a good pace, much to Susan's dismay. Barret put his pork in the yam cage, Ramsay reminded Nedra that she was running out of time, Michael put his goat in the couscous cage, Zach put his lamb in the potato cage, Ray put his turkey in the pasta cage by vigorously catching it by the neck. After more than five minutes, Nedra finally put her turkey in the yam cage. With two minutes left, Amanda put her pork in the potato cage, Susan put her duck in the quinoa cage, Mary put her lamb in the couscous cage, Cyndi put her duck in the risotto cage, and Jacqueline put her goat in the pasta cage.

After cleaning up, the chefs went into their respective kitchens, and the 40-minute countdown to create a stunning dish began. After both teams organized themselves, Nedra revealed that she would make a dish that her mother was doing: a braised turkey leg with sweet potatoes and fried yam. Nedra was determined to perform well so her mother would not kick her ass. Ray revealed that he was doing a pasta dish with turkey meatballs in the blue kitchen and declared that he was proud of his meatballs as his friends loved them, even considering opening a meatball factory. Then, Amanda was creating pork with potato gratin. Still, Ja'Nel wondered if she had enough time to make it, so she decided to cut her potatoes thin, and she was worried when there were only 23 minutes left. After, Michael revealed that he would cook grilled goat ribs with herbed couscous, that he never cooked goat before, and believed that he was the only man on the blue team who had a shot at doing it right. Also, Michael wanted to take the lead by checking everybody else's dish to make sure they were perfect and by giving suggestions. Still, Zach was annoyed as he did not need suggestions. With five minutes left, everybody rallied to plate their dishes. Jacqueline was dismayed that her pasta was still raw, while Amanda was proud that she pulled off her idea, and everybody plated their dishes in time.

When both teams lined up, Ramsay revealed that he would only judge five dishes from each team out of seven, so they had to decide which dishes to drop. Cyndi and Jacqueline sat out for the women, which they felt okay about, and for the men, Jon dropped himself before they agreed to drop Dan's dish, much to his frustration. After Dan flipped the bird to his teammates, both teams lined up in the dining room, and John Shook, of Animal restaurant, was invited as a guest judge. Susan was excited to have her dish judged by him as she wanted to go to Animal for a long time. On the first round, which was the turkey round, Nedra presented her turkey leg with sweet potatoes and yams. The dish was criticized for the presentation looking like if she took it from Captain Caveman, she retorted that she tried to make it look rusty and wanted to see how it would go against "old man Ray." It was appreciated by Shook for the saltiness, despite adding that she could have cooked it a little longer. After Ray presented his turkey meatballs with pasta, Ramsay joked that he had a lot of balls. Still, they were criticized for being dry, and Nedra won the round, making her very proud as she represented her mother well. The score was 1-0 for the women. On the duck round, Susan's duck breast with quinoa was deemed simple but tasty by Shook. In contrast, Anthony's seared duck with Jasmine rice was criticized for being a little bit too crispy on the inside. Because of that, Susan won the round, and the women led 2-0. On the lamb round, Zach's lamb and roasted potatoes were really appreciated by Shook, Mary's pecan-crusted lamb with couscous was raw, and Zach won the round, making the score 2-1 for the women before he laughed about it and told that Mary should get it together. On the the pork round, Amanda served her seared pork with onion ragout and cheesy potatoes, she was extremely relieved to have come through with her potatoes. Still, it was criticized for being overcooked and dry. Amanda revealed that she wanted her potatoes to be done perfectly before Ramsay reminded her that the protein had to be the star. After Barret presented his pan-seared pork, which was cooked perfectly, he called himself a beast. He easily won the round over Amanda, with both Ramsay and Shook just needing to look at it. The score was tied at 2, and Barret was extremely proud of himself. On the final round, which was the goat round, Ja'Nel served her goat and wild mushroom ragout, which was praised for being very tasty and tender, making Jacqueline confident that the women would win the challenge. After that, Michael went up, with Barret saying that he needed to prove that he was the chef he claimed he was. Dan wished he would not mess up after his dish was chosen over his. Michael served his goat rib over a bed of couscous with fresh herbs, which he admitted to having taken a risk as the ribs were taking more time to cook. The presentation was deemed great, but Shook declared that it would be something he would feed to his dog because it was very chewy, to which Ramsay agreed. Zach said that Michael should have given suggestions to himself instead of others, Ja'Nel won the round, and the women won the challenge 3-2, which Ja'Nel was pumped about after recovering from a loss during the previous challenge. Her dish was deemed the best overall, which she was excited about. After, Dan was asked to bring his goat dish so it would be judged. Dan served his rough-cut goat with roasted red pepper risotto cake, and it was deemed better than Michael's dish. Dan said that all of his teammates could go to themselves as they did not stop underestimating him. Finally, John Shook was given a standing ovation by the chefs, and he was dismissed.

Reward[]

The women were rewarded with a day at the Aquarium of the Pacific as VIP guests. Arriving there, Mary, Nedra, and Cyndi put morphing suits on, started to feed penguins, and Nedra declared that she was scared as she thought about when they would bite her finger.

Later, the women were enjoying swimming with the fish. Susan called it an opportunity of a lifetime and was very happy that the women were back on their winning streak.

Punishment[]

The men were punished by putting together a petting zoo and ensuring that the animals would be comfortable for the Family Night dinner service. When he learned the women's reward, Anthony was very envious. Dan called his teammates jackasses while reminding them that they could not blame the loss on him as he did not even contribute.

Arriving outside, the men put thick boots and an apron on. Zach declared that he was a city boy from Philadelphia and was ashamed about becoming a farmer. Later, the men were preparing meals for the animals, with Anthony not believing that they had menus. When Dan said that they would have won if his dish was chosen, Barret mimicked him and disagreed. However, Dan said that he did have some talent, did not care if he was not liked as a person as he was tired of punishments, and outside, the men struggled to make the animals eat their meals.

After, the men had to walk the animals, but Dan was highly annoyed by walking with a llama, his teammates were laughing at him, and he was very disappointed that the only teamwork that the men had was when they were laughing at him, and making fun of him. So, he gave the llama back to the farm girl, and when she asked him why he did not give it to one of his teammates, he declared that he needed a time out before losing his mind. Barret called Dan a little bitch as he was whining about everything, told that he should shut up, and suggested that he eat the food they prepared for the animals as he might be hungry. But, Dan did not find that joke funny, said that he was done after saying "fuck you" to his teammates and their mothers. Dan went back to the dorms as he revealed that his strategy from that moment on was to take care of himself.

Before service[]

The next day, both teams went in their respective kitchens to prep for the Family Night dinner service. In the blue kitchen, the men talked about a plan to get rid of Dan, with Michael even saying that he would be eliminated after one bad service. In the red kitchen, the women were confident as Ja'Nel declared they were focused and feeling good. Susan convinced her teammates that they would win as it was their service.

When both teams lined up, Ramsay informed that his own children would be in attendance on the blue side, but Cyndi was disappointed as the women had themselves together. Ramsay urged everybody not to let themselves down, and after, he asked Jean-Philippe to open Hell's Kitchen for Family Night.

Dinner service[]

When the first children entered the dining room, Susan found them cute, and Ramsay reminded them that he expected a smooth service. In addition to the regular menu, a kids menu was included as well. It featured a Margherita pizza, cheeseburger and fries, and panko-crusted chicken fingers. When the first ticket was called in the blue kitchen, the men got to work, very focused. Zach called two minutes for his risotto so Anthony could walk with his scallops. Dan declared that he loved pizza as he was always buying frozen pizzas at the grocery store. When the pizza was ready, Anthony needed 30 more seconds for the scallops, Dan sliced his pizza, Michael sent it to the pass, and Jon sent the scallops and his burger. However, the pizza was burned, the men were criticized for that mistake, and Jon called Dan a monkey wrench in a machine as he was killing him. Then, Ramsay urged the men to get it together, and they started over. Jon told Dan to slow down and think, but the latter was caught brushing the oven in front of the pizzas, much to Ramsay's extreme dismay. Michael called Dan a train wreck and felt that he needed to step in and help him out. When he did, Dan told him that he had it and suggested he get another pizza ready before Michael promised Ramsay that they would get it together. In the red kitchen, Ja'Nel sent her risotto and Cyndi sent her pizza. However, Jacqueline was not ready with her scallops, Ramsay pushed her to go faster, and when she sent her scallops to the pass, they were rubbery. Ramsay berated Jacqueline for that mistake, reminded her that she had the easiest appetizer, she was disappointed in herself, and the women had to start the entire order over. Amanda was disappointed that the whole team had to refire an entire table for only one order, Susan convinced her teammates that it would only happen once. In the dining room, children found different ways to pass the time while waiting. In the blue kitchen, the men had good communication. Michael was determined to win as the men only lost and failed from the beginning. Their second attempt at the first table was accepted, and Michael motivated his teammates to keep the momentum.

Thirty minutes into the service, both teams were sending out appetizers at a good pace. Jean-Philippe was joking around with a young girl, and in the blue kitchen, Ramsay called his own family's order. Zach acknowledged that a lot was at stake at that moment but was happy that the men were coming together, even comparing it to a symphony, which he called a beautiful thing. The men sent their food, everything was accepted, except a cold cheeseburger, which Ramsay criticized Ray about. Then, Anthony wondered how a cold burger could happen, Ramsay reminded Ray that it was for his family, and Dan said that Ray brought a perfect storm their way. Ramsay slammed the counter while reminding them that it could not happen at that stage of the game. Jon said that Ray should get it together, Ramsay schooled Ray about having the audacity to send a cold cheeseburger to his son, and Ray declared that he would remember that bad event for many years. Then, Ray sent his second attempt, and Jon was ready with the fries. It was accepted, with Ramsay's family being very satisfied. Then, Ray told Jon that he regretted sending the cold burger, Zach motivated him by telling him to keep pushing. In the red kitchen, all of the appetizers were served, and they moved on to entrées. Mary asked Jacqueline for a time, which the latter answered six minutes, and was nervous as she knew that she did not have any chances left after being nominated three times already. Mary, Jacqueline, and Nedra sent their food to the pass. Mary's Wellingtons were beautifully cooked, and Susan was impressed by her huge improvement as she came into her own. In the blue kitchen, the next ticket was called. Anthony acknowledged that the men only won one challenge and one service and that Barret needed to pull through. However, when Barret sliced his lamb, it was still raw, so he had to put it back in the oven for thirty more seconds. Barret wondered what he was doing wrong and knew that he had to figure it out quickly. Anthony's halibut and sea bass were accepted. However, when Barret sent his lamb, he still knew it was raw, and Dan did not say anything because he knew that he would enjoy what would follow. Indeed, when Ramsay sent the lamb back for being raw, Barret was berated for sending it despite knowing it, much to Dan's amusement. Barret was ordered to put it back in the oven. After Zach said that even though he knew that lamb was difficult to work with, Barret needed to go with it, and Ramsay yelled at the latter to put the lamb back in the oven. After Barret was motivated by his teammates, the customers started to lose their patience, he was pushed by Ramsay to send his second attempt at the lamb to the pass quickly. When he did, it was accepted.

In the red kitchen, half of the entrées were served. Ramsay called the next ticket in the blue kitchen. Barret was ready with his chicken but still needed a second opinion, so Jon came over to check the chicken, and he told Barret that it would not be accepted. Barret acknowledged that he was dragging the chicken as Ramsay pushed him to go faster. At the same time, he put his chicken back in the oven. In the red kitchen, the women were on their last ticket with good communication, which Susan praised as she knew that it was what Ramsay was looking for. Amanda vocally led her teammates, all of the entrées from Mary, Nedra, and Amanda were accepted, and after the last ticket was served, the women were congratulated by Ramsay, who ordered them to go into the blue kitchen and help the men to serve their remaining tickets. When they did, Ja'Nel declared how happy she was about blowing out the men, Nedra mocked the men for saying that they did not need help because they did, and when Barret sent his chicken, it was raw. Then, it was revealed that order of chicken was for Sous Chef James' pregnant wife. Jon acknowledged that raw chicken would kill somebody, Barret could not look at Sous Chef James in the eyes as he knew he had a black belt in taekwondo, and Ramsay urged the women to take over after the men sent unacceptable entrées to his own family and Sous Chef James'. Then, Mary took vocal leadership. Dan declared that he did not enjoy that situation. She knew that after Barret sent raw chicken, he would not say anything else to her. After, Nedra praised Mary's performance, even comparing her to a lamb that had finally spoken, and Jon was putting his total trust in Mary. She continued to lead the blue kitchen vocally, all of the entrées were accepted, and Mary was happy about being the chef to beat while acknowledging that she was improving every day and that she would come out on top. Finally, the men served out all of their entrées because of the woman's help. The service was completed, with Barret being extremely embarrassed about his performance.

Post-mortem[]

When the men lined up, Ramsay announced that they were getting killed by the women. They lost the service by a mile and were asked to nominate their two weakest chefs.

While going back to the dorms, Michael was angry about working with people that could not do their jobs properly. During deliberation, Michael yelled at his teammates for being amateurs, not communicating and added that he was embarrassed. Then, he considered Ray for the cold burger to Ramsay's family, but the latter said that he cooked all of his burgers correctly except for the one which happened to be for Ramsay's son, and he declared that he was not the weakest chef. After, Barret was considered by Jon for serving raw chicken to Sous Chef James' pregnant wife and said that Barret should get himself together. Barret admitted his mistakes by saying that he should have checked his chicken repeatedly before considering Dan for not being a team player. Zach agreed with Barret because Dan did not do anything during prep. Jon added that Dan screwed everybody else because of the first pizza, and Dan was not worried as he knew that Ramsay could see what was going on. Finally, Zach told Dan to wake up, and Barret said that all Dan was doing was complaining before threatening to punch him in the face.

Elimination[]

Jon announced Barret as the men's first nominee and Dan as the second. During their pleas, Dan said that he could show he could cook. Still, Ramsay asked Dan how he could mess up a pizza, reminded him that he became an outcast. Dan retorted that he did not care if his teammates disliked him, with Ramsay reminding him that he had to work as a team player. After, Barret was told that he should get stronger, he responded that he was. Still, Ramsay did not believe him as he was going backwards and that he did not seem to care, and Barret retorted that he did and that it was not just about his fancy hair. After deliberation, Dan was eliminated for his lack of teamwork and arrogance. Dan gave an insulting exit interview where he targeted some of his teammates and flipped the birds to them.

After Dan left, Ramsay reminded the men that they only won one service out of six and one challenge out of six before declaring that people would get eliminated faster unless they improved. While being dismissed, Jon called it embarrassing to be dominated like they were by the women and knew that the talking did not mean anything until they were proving themselves. Susan acknowledged that they were beating a horrible team and wondered if only women would be the final six. Barret was crying over the fact that he was accused of not caring by Ramsay.

Ramsay's comment: "Dan was just too much of a wild card. There's no way I'm betting a restaurant in Vegas on him."

Trivia[]

  • According to Ramsay and the blue team, they only won one service since they began. However, it contradicted they also won the breakfast service in the fifth episode. This could mean that either Jeremy's elimination cancelled out their victory or it did not count.
  • This is the only episode to feature Jon Shook as a guest judge without Vinny Dotolo alongside him.
