Main article: Episode 2202 - Tad Overwhelming

The eighteen new chefs arrived at Hell's Kitchen, where Marino awaited them. The chefs entered Hell's Kitchen and noticed the past winners from each season before entering the dining room. To give the chefs some inspiration, Ramsay decided to have them walk through the famous doors and have a taste of what it felt like to win. Afterwards, the chefs got to know each other before the Sous Chefs arrived, making Devon realize how real it was. After the Sous Chefs explained how their time in the competition helped their career, a guitar player appeared and played the national anthem as four other doors appeared behind the curtain, each figure explaining their journey for the American Dream. When Dia Simms told her story, he called it unreal to be in her presence. After Ramsay stepped out, he welcomed the chefs to the twenty-second season, where they were celebrating the American Dream. Ramsay said the three celebrities the chefs saw were proof of the American Dream and that Hell's Kitchen was part of the American Dream. Ramsay said the winner of that season would become his Head Chef at Hell's Kitchen in Caesars Las Vegas with a salary of $250,000. Then, Ramsay told the chefs that their Signature Dish Challenge was about to begin.

During the Signature Dish Challenge, Devon was disappointed that Dahmere used boxed pasta as he knew the latter could do better. He was the fourth person from the red team to have his dish judged by Ramsay and went up against Sammi. He made a smoked pork tenderloin. It was praised for a good cook despite tasting too sweet, and he scored three points. The blue team lost the challenge after a 29-point tie. They were punished by participating in delivery day and cleaning up both kitchens.[1]

Devon lost the Creative Scallops Challenge as his dish was not chosen to be in the top three. Back at the dorms, he reminded the group in the blue bedroom that they get to bring back the jackets and the knives after the competition. Then, he disagreed with Jason's comments that the women were weak.

During dinner service, Devon was at the fish station with Jason. He felt intimidated to cook for Oscar De La Hoya and got nervous about working with Jason as he knew the former would not be perfect despite working in Michelin Star restaurants before. He saw that Jason's lobster tail was raw, but the latter sent it to the pass. However, Ramsay saw something wrong and took him and Jason to the back room. The lobster tail came out raw, and Ramsay ordered them to get a grip. Jason knew he was not performing to his standards, while he knew he looked bad, thanks to the former. So, he helped Jason on the third attempt, and it was accepted. When the men worked on Hoya's order, he compared Tad and Brad's performance to a twenty-car pile-up. Both teams were named joint losers, and they were asked to nominate two each.

He was not nominated for elimination.[2]

Episode 3[]

Main article: Episode 2203 - Citizens of Hell's Kitchen

Devon was at the waffle station with Jason during the American Citizen Brunch Service Challenge. He was not seen during the challenge, and the blue team won it. They were rewarded with a Los Angeles-styled pool party at the Godfrey Hotel with a lunch catered by Craig’s. During the reward, he pointed out that they won despite having one less person, which meant they were growing over the women.

During dinner service, Devon served Cobb salad in the dining room. At one point, he started conversing with a patron as he worked on the Cobb salad, knowing Ramsay expected him to do so. Both teams were named joint losers, and they were asked to nominate two each.

He was not nominated for elimination.[3]

Episode 4[]

Main article: Episode 2204 - Gimme an H!

During the American Classics Challenge, Devon went up against Sandra, and their dish was a Philly Cheesesteak after he picked an H. He was the fourth person from the blue team to have his dish judged by Ramsay and presented his Philly cheesesteak with coffee and pepper marinated sirloin. It had good pink meat from the cook, and he tied that round with Sandra. The blue team won the challenge 7-6, and they were rewarded with a trip to Santa Barbara with parasailing and dinner at the Hotel Milo. During the reward, he felt that Melissa picked the right time to use her Punishment Pass.

During dinner service, Devon was at the appetizer station with Brad. When Mattias struggled on the lobster tails, he got annoyed as he was trying to lead the former to success. After Ryan sent up raw lamb, he warned the former to get it together as he had a target on his back. The blue team lost the service, and they were asked to nominate two people for elimination.

He was not nominated for elimination.[4]

Episode 5[]

Main article: Episode 2205 - Just Bring the DARN Fish!

During the Protein Identification Challenge, Devon was paired up with Dahmere, and they were the second pair from the blue team to compete. Their dish was crab and ostrich. Their first attempt, langoustine and elk, was wrong, but they got the second attempt correct. The blue team won the challenge 6:39-13:14, and he said the men's ability to work as a team was second to none after winning three challenges in a row. They were rewarded with an axe-throwing experience, with Ramsay joining them. During the reward, he agreed with Jason about Melissa's attitude when they left and wondered if one of the women would collapse the red kitchen that night.

During dinner service, Devon was at the fish station with Brad. While he walked up his lobster tails, Ramsay asked where the scallops were. They were not ready, and Ramsay pulled the men to the front for a lecture. Ramsay asked why neither he nor Brad had dropped the scallops earlier. Brad admitted it was a communication breakdown, but Jason was unhappy as his risotto was perfect. On the refire, they got the scallops accepted. Later that evening, he said he was ready to bounce back. The blue team won the service.[5]

Episode 6[]

Main article: Episode 2206 - Fusion Confusion

During the Fusion Cuisine Challenge, Devon went up against Atoye, and he hit Thai, while the latter hit Chinese. He was the fourth person from the blue team to have his dish judged, and he presented his Chinese barbecue chicken with Thai rice. It lacked acidity and spice, and he lost that round to Atoye. The blue team won the challenge 4-3, and they were rewarded with a day playing bubble soccer and brand-new Keurig sets.

During prep, Devon was worried about Brad’s health and that something might happen in the middle of the night. Still, Brad was determined to push through that night. During dinner service, he was at the meat station with Brad. When Jason fired fish ahead of time, Ramsay warned him that eight minutes for a steak would not work. Also, Ramsay told Jason that the halibut would not hold its heat for eight minutes and urged the latter to communicate with him. They both agreed for six minutes, but he accused Jason of looking out for himself as he picked up the pace for the steak. Brad walked it up, but the steak came out raw. Ramsay brought fish and meat to the front and showed them the raw steak. He acknowledged that he had rushed the protein, and they were forced to start over. He knew that rushing it did not work, but the refire was accepted, and the men served their first entrée order.

After Brad's exit, Ramsay asked both teams to nominate two each. During deliberation, Devon said he had two steaks sent back, but while he said he had issues going into his head during services, he knew he was not a weak chef. Jermaine voted for him for the raw steaks, but he argued that the former had yet to lead a station. He knew that Jermaine could not hide behind someone anymore, but the latter argued that he wanted to learn from people rather than try to get ahead of himself. Then, Jermaine accused him of being a snake.

Devon was not nominated for elimination despite Jermaine believing he should have been.[6]

Episode 7[]

Main article: Episode 2207 - All Up in Your Grills

During the Grilling Challenge, Devon went up against Carmen, and their protein was the flat iron steak. During the cooking, he knew that the flat iron was a forgiving protein to grill, but he knew he must be careful not to overcook it. Three minutes left, Sous Chef Jason caught him slicing his steak too early, as that should be the last thing to do. He was the fifth person from the blue team to have his dish judged, and while he acknowledged Carmen as a great chef, he thought he was better. He made a coffee and five spice-rubbed flat iron on top of a fire-roasted bell pepper puree. While the dish had great potatoes, Aaron Franklin thought the steak was overcooked. He lost that round to Carmen and cursed that he had sliced his steak too early. The blue team lost the challenge 2-5, and they were punished by cleaning the grills, disassembling them, and packing them up for the women.

During the Steak Night dinner service, Devon was at the meat station with Dahmere. After Jermaine served cold garnishes, he thought that garnish was dead in the weeds. Later, Ramsay saw that they were missing a New York striploin for the six-top order, and he promised he would have it in four minutes. As Ramsay served an incomplete order, he blamed Jermaine for falling apart and not reminding him of the order. Then, Ramsay sliced into a blue steak and pulled the men into the pantry for a quick meeting. As the men returned to the kitchen, he tried to pull himself while everyone else was helping Jermaine with garnish. As Marino came to voice the table's complaint, he pushed for the steak refire and had Dahmere walk it up. It was accepted, but Ramsay told the men to get their heads out of their butts. On the following order, he served a filet that was rare to the point blood was dripping out, and Ramsay kicked the men out of the kitchen. As they went back upstairs, Ryan blamed him for losing his composure.

The blue team lost the service, and Dahmere was named the "Best of the Worst". During deliberation, Ryan angrily told Devon that he knew better than that, and he agreed with that accusation. Still, he said he got swamped that night and knew the situation that night had. After Dahmere's speech, Ryan told him he only got on his case because he knew he could do better. He agreed with Ryan as the last two steaks got away from him. Jermaine said he made mistakes on meat and did not think he took ownership of the raw steaks. He argued that he asked multiple times for tickets, which snowballed into meat. He felt he could be home that night and blamed Jermaine for causing him to fail. Afterwards, he broke down as he knew he could do better.

Devon was Dahmere's second nominee for elimination, with Jermaine as the first. When he went down, Ramsay reminded him not to send him raw meat if he knew it was not ready, but he promised it would never happen again. During his plea, he said he was consistently evolving and learning from his mistakes and believed he was not the weakest chef for the men. When Ramsay asked him who was, he said Jermaine. He survived elimination. While being dismissed, he felt frustrated upon his nomination but planned on stepping up as the leader he was.[7]

Episode 8[]

Main article: Episode 2208 - Cooking For Your Life

Back at the dorms, a frazzled Devon thought he was going home that night and knew he worked too hard to let his dream die. As Devon had a breakdown in the dorms, he revealed that he taught himself to cook and was homeless and jobless in his life. However, Devon said that as a queer Canadian Jew black man, he defied the odds and called himself the definition of the American Dream. As the women came upstairs, Leigh comforted Devon and told him he was a good chef.

When Ramsay asked the chefs what the top five ethnic cuisines in America were, Devon answered Mexican, which was number two on the board. During the Last Chef Standing Challenge, he cooked the steak tacos and was the fourth chef from the blue team to leave the kitchen. He was the first chef from the blue team to have his dish judged and went up against Leigh. His dish was praised for being delicious and having everything Ramsay wanted from a taco, with the latter liking the toasted shells. He tied that round with Leigh, and the blue team won the challenge 5-3. They were rewarded with a wellness retreat, lunch from Crossroads Kitchen, and Hexclad cookware. As the men walked to the SUVs, they saw the women sort through trash, and he claimed the smell hit them like a right hook from Mike Tyson.

Later that day, Ramsay held private interviews with the chefs. Devon was the seventh chef to meet with Ramsay and was told not to underestimate his worth of being in Hell's Kitchen. He was named one of the weakest chefs on the blue team and was forced to compete in the Cook For Your Life Challenge. He was joined by Jason, Sandra, and Atoye. During the cooking, he said his biggest issue was trusting himself, but he was ready to prove to everyone he had it. Johnathan saw his game face and knew it was his time to bounce back after failing on Steak Night. Five minutes left, the chefs saw him put his filet in the convection oven, much to Ryan’s dismay as that was a no-no. Then, he sliced the meat six times, which Ryan called a cardinal sin. He was the final chef to have his dish judged by Ramsay, and he presented his butter and herb-basted filet mignon with chive pomme puree. Ramsay saw the blood flowing from the steak due to him slicing it six times, but the former did appreciate the red wine flavor of the dish. Afterwards, he believed his dish was better than Atoye’s, and he deserved to stay. Before Ramsay made his decision, the former reminded him that while his puree was delicious, the filet was overcooked and bland. Ultimately, he was eliminated, but Ramsay told him that he respected his determination and told him to keep his dreams alive. During his exit interview, he felt disappointed and knew that second-guessing himself was what doomed him in the end.

Ramsay's comment: "If you're going to work in my kitchen, you'd better know how to cook a filet. Two words Devon will never hear from me are 'well done'."[8]

Quotes[]

  • (After being eliminated) "I definitely let myself down, and I made a silly mistake tonight. I'm a perfectionist at heart. And so, when I mess things up, I get down on myself. That's my lesson here. I just didn't trust myself. And when you're in a competition like this, if you don't trust yourself about what you've been doing for years, then you're going to fail no matter what."
