The Creative Steak Challenge is a recurring challenge in Hell’s Kitchen.

Overview[]

A recurring challenge since Season 10, Ramsay will pick or have chefs go against each other from each team and decide what steak to cook with. They would then have their dishes judged. If done during the team format, the rounds would be determined by steak cuts, and the winner of each round will score a point. The team with the most points at the end would win the challenge. If done during the individual phase, then the person with the best dish overall will win the challenge. The purpose of this challenge is to test the chef’s skills in cooking different cuts of steak.

History[]

Season 10[]

On Episode 9, the challenge first took place when there were 11 chefs left, 6 on the red team, and five on the blue team. Ramsay had one chef from each team go up against each other, and to decide what they would be cooking, they had to pull a slots machine to reveal their cut of steak and ingredients. Because the red team had an extra person, Kimmie was forced to sit out on the pairing, but after the ingredients were chosen, she could choose what set of ingredients to cook with. She went with Robyn and Clemenza’s ribeye set. Afterwards, the chefs had 30 minutes to cook their steak dishes, but after the cooking, Ramsay asked the red team to sit out either Kimmie or Robyn’s dish for judging. They decided to sit out Kimmie. Justin beat Tiffany on the filet round, while Christina beat Royce on the hanger steak. Neither Dana nor Patrick scored on the flat iron, while Brian and Barbie tied on the New York striploin. Finally, Clemenza scored on the ribeye over Robyn, and the blue team won the challenge 3-2. The blue team went on a shopping spree at Sur la Table and lunch at Comme Ca, while the red team had to take in an order of a side of beef, and prep it for Steak Family Night.[1]

Season 11[]

On Episode 9, the challenge took place when there were 13 chefs left, 7 on the red team, and 6 on the blue team. Both teams had thirty minutes to cook six cuts of steaks, all to medium-rare temperature. Because the red team had an extra person, Nedra and Susan partnered up on the filet mignon. Jon scored over Cyndi on the porterhouse, while the pair of Nedra and Susan tied with Zach on the filet mignon. Neither Amanda nor Michael scored on the New York striploin, but both Anthony and Jacqueline tied on the rib cap, while Ja'Nel beat Barret on the hanger steak. Finally, Mary scored on the ribeye over Ray, giving the red team the win at 4-3. They went to the Wilshire Hotel for a day at the pool along with manicures and pedicures, while the blue team took in a delivery of a giant cut of beef, and prepared it for Steak Night.[2]

Season 15[]

On Episode 15, the challenge took place when there were three chefs left. Known as the BLT Bone-in Steak Challenge, Ramsay gave the final three a suitcase that contained a different cut of steak each. Then, they had 40 minutes to cook their steaks that included two sides. Ari Rosenson came to help Ramsay judge the challenge. In the end, Kristin’s ribeye with bacon and gorgonzola potato purée and grilled asparagus was deemed the best, and she won the challenge. Kristin had lunch with Ramsay at CUT, all cooked by Rosenson, while Ariel and Ashley had to clean the armored truck and police motorcycles, and prep for the following service.[3]

Season 21[]

On Episode 9, the challenge took place when there were 10 chefs left, five on both teams. This challenge was divided into two parts. For part one, one chef from each team must go head to head playing carnival games for an advantage. Alejandro, Tara, Sakari, Abe, and Sommer won the games and earned a five minute head start over their opponents, who had forty minutes afterwards. Dafne beat Sakari on the hanger steak, while Vlad won the rib cap over Tara. Cheyenne scored on the ribeye over Abe, but Alejandro won the New York Striploin round over Brett. Lastly, Sommer beat Alex on the filet mignon, giving the red team victory 3-2. They went to the Paradise Point hotel in San Diego, where they stayed in the Presidential suite overnight and rode jet skis. The blue team were forced to clean the dorms and prep vegetables for Steak Night.[4]

Season 23[]

On Episode 7, the challenge took place when there were 12 chefs left, six on both teams. Ramsay had both teams to pick five ingredients in five rounds before cooking their steaks. Brandon won the New York Striploin round over Brittany, while Meghan and Kyle tied on the tomahawk round. Egypt beat Hannah on the rib cap. Ann Marie and Joe tied on the ribeye, but Amanda won the filet round over Lulu. Lastly, Whit won the t-bone round over Anthony, which tied the challenge 4-4. Ramsay picked Egypt's rib cap dish as the tiebreaker, giving the blue team the victory. They went to the Norch Spa at Foxwoods for day of spa treatments. The red team had to make types of butter (cowboy butter, garlic butter, and lemon butter) and pick herbs by hand for chimichurri for Steak Night.[5]

Trivia[]

  • Season 15 is the only season where this challenge was used in the black jackets phase.[3]
  • The red team and blue team are tied at winning this challenge with two seasons each[2][4] after the blue team won it again in another season.[1][5]
