The Creative Dessert Challenge is a recurring challenge in Hell's Kitchen.
Overview[]
For that challenge, Ramsay has both teams make their own dessert dishes. The judging for this challenge goes from a total ranking from the judges, and the team with the most points at the end were the winners. If done in the individual phase, the person with the best dessert won the challenge.
This challenge tests the chef’s ability to make creative desserts.
History[]
Season 1[]
Episode 9 was the first time the challenge took place. It happened when there were three chefs left. Known as the Perfect Soufflé Challenge, the final three had 10 minutes to create a unique perfect soufflé dessert. Ralph's chocolate hazelnut mint soufflé was deemed the best, and he won the challenge. He won first pick of proteins to use for the following dinner service.[1]
Season 9[]
Episode 9 was when the challenge first took place during the team phase. It happened when there were 9 chefs left, 5 on the red team, and 4 on the blue team. Ramsay gave both teams an hour to make their dessert dishes, and after the cooking time, he asked the red team to drop a dish so both teams would be even at 4 each. They ended up dropping Elise’s dish. Waylynn Lucas and Jordan Kahn were invited as guest judges for the challenge, and both ranked each dish on a 1-3 scale, with 6 being the most. Jamie scored 3 over Tommy’s 2, but Paul scored 6 over Elizabeth’s 3, and Natalie scored 3 over Carrie’s 2. Lastly, Jennifer scored 6 over Will’s 2, and the red team won the challenge 14-13. They went to Las Vegas for the night and stayed in the Caesars Palace’s five-bedroom villa, while the blue team was forced to decorate the dining room for Date Night and prepare a raw bar.[2]
Season 18[]
Episode 11 had it when there were 7 chefs left, 4 on the blue team, and 3 on the red team. Ramsay gave both teams an hour to make their dessert dishes, and after the cooking time, he asked the blue team to drop a dish so both teams would be even at 4 each. They ended up dropping Heather’s dish. Valerie Gordon came in as a guest judge, and she and Ramsay ranked each dish on a 1-5 rating, 10 being the most. Motto’s 7 beat out Kanae’s 3, but Mia’s 4 beat out Bret’s 2. Lastly, Ariel’s 7 beat out Trev’s 2, and the blue team won the challenge 14-11. They went on a $2,000 shopping spree at Sur la Table, along with lunch at Joey Woodland Hills, while the red team took in deliveries of 600 pounds of ice, and cutting them into ice cubes.[3]
Trivia[]
- This is one of the few challenges that was done in both the team phase and the individual phase.
- Season 1 is unique because it is one of the few times a punishment did not happen outside the Final Signature Dish Challenge and the Final Tasting Challenge.[1]
- In the two times this challenge was used during the team phase, an all-female team won it. Also, they had an extra team member with them over the losing team.[2][3]
