Main article: Episode 2201 - The Dream Begins
Main article: Episode 2202 - Tad Overwhelming

The eighteen new chefs arrived at Hell's Kitchen, where Marino awaited them. As the chefs unloaded from the SUVs, Carmen introduced herself as a Peruvian from Miami determined to win. The chefs entered Hell's Kitchen and noticed the past winners from each season before entering the dining room. To give the chefs some inspiration, Ramsay decided to have them walk through the famous doors and have a taste of what it felt like to win. Afterwards, the chefs got to know each other before the Sous Chefs arrived, explaining how their time in the competition helped their careers. Later, a guitar player appeared and played the national anthem as four other doors appeared behind the curtain, each figure explaining their journey for the American Dream. After Ramsay stepped out, he welcomed the chefs to the twenty-second season, where they were celebrating the American Dream. Ramsay said the three celebrities the chefs saw were proof of the American Dream and that Hell's Kitchen was part of the American Dream. Ramsay said the winner of that season would become his Head Chef at Hell's Kitchen in Caesars Las Vegas with a salary of $250,000. Then, Ramsay told the chefs that their Signature Dish Challenge was about to begin.

During the Signature Dish Challenge, Carmen was the third chef from the red team to have her dish judged by Ramsay, and she went up against Dahmere. Before having her dish judged, she revealed that she got her cooking skills from her grandmother and traveled to Peru. She made Peruvian cilantro grain rice and pan-seared duck. They were praised for having a well-cooked duck and rice, and Ramsay felt that she did her background right, giving her four points. During Dahmere's turn, Ramsay gave her a piece of lobster to confirm that it tasted bland. While she said Dahmere's dish was worthy of a two, Ramsay said she was generous.

The red team won the challenge after a 29-point tie. They were rewarded with a day at a Beverly Hills Mansion. During the reward, Carmen called it priceless, and at dinner, she asked Ramsay what he would tell himself twenty years ago. Ramsay said he would have wanted to travel more and experience more cultures.[1]

During the Creative Scallops Challenge, Carmen called the Punishment Passes gold and tried to push her dish into the top three so she could attempt to win one. She did everything by stating that Donya, Atoye, and Melissa's dishes lacked salt. In a form of irony, everyone thought her dish was underwhelming, but she was adamant that her dish was in the top three. She lost the challenge after her dish was not in the top three, upsetting her as she thought she was a front-runner in the competition.

During dinner service, Carmen was at the fish station with Leigh. On entrées, she said the salmon would be ready in six minutes, but Ramsay said he wanted them prepared in five. While she felt confident as she cooked a lot of fish, she was not sure about cooking the salmon. Then, she walked it to the pass despite Sandra not being ready with meat, and the latter was not happy with the poor communication. Later, she had her salmon ready despite Sandra and Atoye did not have their chicken fired. When the women got kicked out of service, she was deflated as she cooked with passion and felt no one showed it. Both teams were named joint losers, and they were asked to nominate two each. During deliberation, Sandra pointed out how she kept shouting off random numbers. She argued that she did not serve raw food and felt that Sandra blamed her for her failures.

She was not nominated for elimination.[2]

Episode 3[]

Main article: Episode 2203 - Citizens of Hell's Kitchen

During the American Citizen Brunch Service Challenge, Carmen was at the egg station with Leigh. At one point, she claimed she was there to win and tried pushing women to communicate properly. On the final order, she hesitated on the eggs as she did not want to serve them raw. However, that costed the red team a victory as she served them moments after the blue team completed service. She apologized for costing the women the win but argued that no one was communicating well and that they were rushing to get the order out. However, Raneisha argued that she should have listened to the ticket and timing, which would not have caused her to rush. Raneisha screamed at her over her excuses, which was loud enough for the guests to hear. The red team was punished by cleaning up all the confetti in the dining room by hand.

During dinner service, Carmen was at the meat station with Raneisha. After Claudia served a raw lobster tail, she got annoyed and told the former to wake up. While working on Bobby Berk's order, Donya asked her for a time on proteins. She said seven minutes, but Donya said she wanted it done in six minutes as she got annoyed by her slow performance. In the following order, the women worked on their next ticket, but Ramsay told her not to give him indirect timings when she started explaining possible window times. As she kept micromanaging the garnish station, Raneisha got annoyed by her partner’s attitude, demanding that she focus on the meat station. While waiting for Donya's refire at the pass, she did not like disappointing Ramsay. After the red team got kicked out of the kitchen, she was not pleased to be kicked out after their strong start and felt Raneisha had dropped the ball.

Both teams were named joint losers, and they were asked to nominate two each. During deliberation, Carmen wanted to focus on what got them kicked out of the kitchen, and Sammi asked her teammates what the first mistake of the evening was. She told Sammi about Donya’s problems on the halibut and pointed out that Claudia did nothing to help the latter, feeling the latter deserved to go home as she was in la la land for most of her time in the competition. Claudia did not feel she deserved to be nominated, even though she brought up the raw lobster tail, and Donya brought up the communication problems between stations. She argued that she tried her best, but Donya felt she should have been more direct and did not like how she was not taking responsibility. Atoye got annoyed by her elongated explanations, and Raneisha pointed out that she gave inconsistent timings. After some bickering, Raneisha left the room as she could not stand to be near her, and the former felt she was not taking responsibility for her mistakes.

Carmen was not nominated for elimination, but Donya told Ramsay that she was her nominee due to her second-guessing herself and not communicating well. While being dismissed, she said she had the drive and passion to win and did not understand why her name was called up.[3]

Episode 4[]

Main article: Episode 2204 - Gimme an H!

During the American Classics Challenge, Carmen went up against Jason. She picked N, and their dish was chicken wings. She was the second person from the red team to have her dish judged by Ramsay, and she presented her gochujang marinated chicken wings. They were praised for the sauce, and she scored over Jason. The red team lost the challenge 6-7, and they were punished by baking bread for the following service, which included grinding the wheat by hand.

During dinner service, Carmen served a French onion crostini in the dining room. She was not seen that night, and the red team won the service.[4]

Episode 5[]

Main article: Episode 2205 - Just Bring the DARN Fish!

During the Protein Identification Challenge, Carmen was paired with Atoye, and they were the first pair from the red team to compete. Their dish was oysters and venison. The fish threw her off as nothing seemed simple, so she and Atoye grabbed venison and crab. It was half right, and they grabbed ostrich to replace venison. However, they got a red light, and their third attempt, crawfish and venison, was half right. For their fourth attempt, she realized that she was overthinking it and grabbed oysters to pair with the venison. That time, it was right. The red team lost the challenge 13:14-6:39, and they were punished by taking in deliveries of Alaskan salmon and prepping them for the following service.

During dinner service, Carmen was at the appetizer station with Donya. She acknowledged the ups and downs she had with Raneisha and Sandra, but she wanted them to get off to a strong start. The dishes were sent up, but her risotto lacked seasoning, and everyone said it needed salt after tasting it. When Melissa got the attention of Sous Chef Christina and Ramsay, she knew they were looking for a leader, and the latter did not deserve to stay if she did not communicate. The red team lost the service, and they were asked to nominate two people for elimination. During deliberation, she was disappointed that they took five steps backward.

She was not nominated for elimination.[5]

Episode 6[]

Main article: Episode 2206 - Fusion Confusion

During the Fusion Cuisine Challenge, Carmen went up against Johnathan, and she hit Japanese while the latter hit Thai. She was the final person from the red team to have her dish judged, and while she recognized that Johnathan was one of the strongest chefs in the competition, she wanted to prove herself to Ramsay. She made a Japanese-inspired salad with miso dressing and pan-fried snapper. It had a nice crispy fish, and Tony Messina said it screamed Japanese. She lost that round to Johnathan, and the red team lost the challenge 3-4. They were punished by prepping ingredients for the carbonara for service, including shucking peas, dicing pancetta, and shredding parmesan by hand. During the punishment, she felt her arms give out on her and swore the women would win the following challenge.

During dinner service, Carmen was at the meat station with Donya. At one point, Ramsay warned them that it was all meat for the entrée order, but Donya was pumped as she worked with meat despite being a pescatarian. Both she and Donya worked well on the meat and got their entrées accepted, much to Ramsay’s pleasure. As Donya felt excited, Ramsay urged them to keep it up. After Brad left, Ramsay asked both teams to nominate two each. During deliberation, she decided to base her nominations on the challenge that day. When Sandra brought up how she failed to score, she wanted to move forward without the weak links as everyone struggled to make a decision.

She was not nominated for elimination.[6]

Episode 7[]

Main article: Episode 2207 - All Up in Your Grills

During the Grilling Challenge, Carmen went up against Devon, and their protein was the flat iron steak. She was the fifth person from the red team to have her dish judged, and she presented her dry-rubbed flat iron steak with grilled tomato salsa. It was deemed a little too far out there, making her worry as she saw Devon's plate be judged next. Still, she scored over Devon, and the red team won the challenge 5-2. They were rewarded with the right to keep the Vision brand grills used in the challenge, a day at Dave and Busters, and lunch cooked by Yamashiro. During the cooking, she and Leigh hit targets by imagining they were hitting Jason's face. At lunch, she led the women in a prayer for a successful service.

During the Steak Night dinner service, Carmen was at the garnish station. She was not seen that night, and the red team won the service.[7]

Episode 8[]

Main article: Episode 2208 - Cooking For Your Life

When Ramsay asked the chefs what were the top five ethnic cuisines in America, Carmen said Indian, which was number five. During the Last Chef Standing Challenge, she chose to cook the Indian chicken curry dish as she loved curry. When both teams had to kick out a chef, she refused to leave the kitchen without a fight. Atoye tried to communicate with her about her fried rice dish, but she ignored the former's suggestion not to over-salt her dish. She was the third chef to leave the red kitchen. At one point, she ignored Atoye's instructions about what rice to use as the latter told Sandra to use the fried rice for the curry. She was the final person from the red team to have her dish judged by Ramsay and went up against Ryan. Her chicken thigh curry had a good texture on the meat thanks to her keeping the meat on the bone, but she lost that round to Ryan.

The red team lost the challenge 3-5, and they were punished by participating in trash sorting day, which included building compost boxes. Back at the dorms, Atoye angrily blamed Carmen for not letting her speak in the challenge. After Atoye stormed off, Donya admitted that the former had every right to be mad as she spoke over her, but she argued that there was no other way to communicate in that challenge.

Later that day, Ramsay held private interviews with the chefs. Carmen was the sixth chef to have her interview, where Ramsay told her to stop doubting her skills on the line. She did not have to compete in the Cook For Your Life Challenge as she was not deemed one of the weakest chefs on the red team.[8]

Episode 9[]

Main article: Episode 2209 - More Bang For Your Buck

Before the Budget Challenge, Carmen said goodbye to Atoye as the latter was reassigned to the blue team. During the cooking, she cooked the ribeye and hoped she could get in the high $40s with her dish. She was the final person from the red team to have her dish judged, but she knew there was a lot of talent in the top ten and hoped she could deliver. Her seared ribeye with parsnip and leek puree had a beautiful ribeye, but Suzanne Goin questioned some of the dish's components. As she anxiously waited for the results, Goin gave her $40. The red team lost the challenge $207-$208 and they were punished by making puff pastry for the beef Wellingtons and churning butter by hand. As the red team went back to the dorms, she was deflated to cost her team the win and said it was the sixth challenge they had lost in the competition.

During dinner service, Carmen was at the garnish station. When both teams were on their final tickets, she refused to let the red team lose. On the last order, she pulled the Wellington refire from the oven and told Sandra it was warm. However, it was cold. The red team lost the service, and they were asked to nominate two people for elimination. During deliberation, she could not believe they had lost that night.

She was not nominated for elimination.[9]

Episode 10[]

Main article: Episode 2210 - The Pastabilities Are Endless

When the chefs went outside, Carmen saw two balance beams standing in marinara sauce, wondering if this was another punishment. During part one of the Creative Pasta Challenge, she called herself a Tasmanian devil and moved slowly to Ramsay’s liking. However, Sammi got impatient with her slow speed as Ryan got back before she began crossing over. She was seen getting lobster but was too slow to beat Johnathan. The red team lost part one and had to start five minutes after the blue team. During the cooking, she knew ravioli was a hard dish to make and knew she had a hard battle against Ryan, who she considered a strong chef on the blue team. She was the second person from the red team to have her dish judged, and she presented her mozzarella-lobster stuffed ravioli with shallots and garlic. It was criticized for the lack of lobster, and she lost that round to Ryan.

The red team won the challenge 3-1, and they were rewarded with a goat yoga session and an Oxo cooking set. During the reward, Carmen was uncomfortable during the yoga session as she found it hilarious rather than relaxing.

During dinner service, Carmen was at the meat station. When the red team worked on Alix Klineman's order, she wanted to shine as a leader for the latter but dragged on the lamb when Donya sent her salmon up. When she did send up the lamb, it was raw, and Ramsay asked where the standards went. She promised to get it fixed in a minute, but Ramsay wondered where the chef he saw the previous night went. Eventually, the refire was accepted, but Ramsay said he did not expect that from her on their eighth service. Both teams were named joint losers, and Leigh was named the "Best of the Worst" for the red team. During deliberation, she felt she was stagnating in the competition and questioned if she came into the competition too early in her career. Leigh tried to comfort her in the red bedroom.

Carmen was Leigh's second nominee for elimination, with Donya as the first. They joined Jason and Atoye from the blue team. During her plea, Ramsay asked her how hungry she was about winning on a scale from one to ten. She said a million, as she had passion, integrity, and energy. She survived elimination. While being dismissed, she said it sucked to be nominated, but she tried to remind herself that she deserved to stay.[10]

Episode 11[]

Main article: Episode 2211 - A Hellish Food Fight

When Ramsay announced the Blind Taste Test, Carmen said she had waited for that challenge since she entered the competition. She was the first person from the red team to compete, and she went up against Ryan. She only got bell pepper correct, resulting in Sammi getting the milk dunk and sprinkle dunk punishments. During Donya's turn, she got the milk dunk punishment. The red team lost the challenge 5-7, and they were punished by cleaning up the dining room ahead of Charity Night. During the punishment, she warned the men that they would do something to their toothbrushes after Johnathan jokingly asked if they could leave a mint on his pillow.

When Ramsay told the red team they would cook for Teen Cancer America, that hit hard for Carmen as she lost someone to cancer. During the Charity Night dinner service, she was in charge of the potato gnocchi course and the raspberry soufflé course. On the gnocchi course, Ramsay called her and Jason to the front of the pass, and both agreed to be ready in seven minutes. She was prepared to lead the women on her first course but accidentally called out scallops instead of gnocchi. Leigh noticed that she brought out some frantic energy in her leadership, and the former saw that she was unsure about her leadership. Still, she got her course out. During the filet mignon course, she realized that Donya was not good with delegating roles after running back to cook more meat, especially on a night like now. During the raspberry soufflé course, she continued to struggle to lead the women, even when her teammates told her to talk with Jason.

Both teams were named joint losers, and they were asked to nominate one each. During deliberation, Carmen disagreed with Donya's belief she did well as she felt the latter kept to herself that night. When she asked about her performance, Sammi said that she tried to be more in the movement than delegating. Although she felt she had the loudest voice in the red kitchen, Sammi disagreed.

She was not nominated for elimination.[11]

Episode 12[]

Main article: Episode 2212 - A Hell's Kitchen Special Delivery

When the Sous Chefs pulled out a giant craps table for the first Black Jackets Challenge, it made Carmen remember Las Vegas. She rolled a T but struggled to pick an ingredient before picking turnips. She was the second chef to have her dish judged by Ramsay and presented her miso-glazed halibut with cauliflower puree, spinach truffle oil, and broccoli turnip truffle relish. The dish was smooth, but Ramsay did not get the relish component as he would have liked grated truffle. That made her wonder if she screwed up. She lost the challenge to Johnathan and Sammi, and she was forced to compete in the second challenge.

During the second Black Jackets Challenge, Carmen grabbed scallops and compared themselves racing towards the ingredients to a herd of wild animals going after prey. She grabbed Peruvian purple potatoes and immediately had an idea for a purple potato puree, wanting to cook with her Peruvian heart. She later grabbed cauliflower and white anchovies. She was the second person to have her dish judged by Ramsay, and she presented her pan-seared scallops with purple potatoes two ways and gremolata with white anchovies. They were deemed beautiful and had nicely seared scallops, but Ramsay warned her about putting too much puree on the plate. Also, Ramsay thought the dish needed more heat to bring out the Peruvian background she wanted. After her critique, she knew Ramsay was nitpicking at all the minor details, but she was confident she would win a black jacket. She won the fourth black jacket as her dish was too good for Ramsay to critique. She returned to the dorms and felt she had a fire inside herself after busting her butt, working multiple jobs and going to school the previous year.

When the black jacket chefs watched the final challenge, Carmen noticed that Jason grabbed the lobster and wondered if he was trying to redeem himself from his signature dish. As the black jacket chefs waited for the fifth person to enter, she prayed that Leigh went through the doors. Sure enough, Leigh walked through the dorms, making her excited as the former deserved it. As the final six celebrated, she said she was there for a reason and wearing a black jacket was the push she needed.[12]

Episode 13[]

Main article: Episode 2213 - HellishHangover

During the Presentation Challenge, Carmen made a lobster tiradito but sliced the lobster to make it pretty and easy to plate. She was the final person to have her dish judged, and she presented her Peruvian lobster tiradito. The dish looked retro but appealing, and the taste was good despite some spice dominating the flavors. Afterwards, she scored seventeen points, making her pray that Ramsay’s followers deemed her dish the best so she could get out of the four-way tie for first place. Her dish was named the second best online, and she scored an additional nine points, ending up with twenty-six points. She lost the challenge to Leigh, but the latter picked her to come with her on the reward: a day at the Muscle Lab in Pasadena, a high tea ceremony at Langham Huntington, and a Spiceology set. As the two went upstairs, she said she needed some rejuvenation after the punishments they did.

During the reward, Leigh and Carmen got changed for cryotherapy, but she was not used to the cold weather due to living in Miami. Still, she felt good after two minutes and felt in her element after getting into the sauna. At teatime, she felt the other chefs were getting cocky and knew they deserved to wear black jackets.

During dinner service, Carmen was at the meat station with Leigh. She called out orders only to serve a raw steak. However, she got the refire accepted. In the following order, Carmen drove the timings for the proteins, thinking that Ramsay put her and Leigh on meat to showcase their leadership. However, she did not communicate well with Dahmere as the latter felt she was not talking with him, and he did not have his fish ready. She served her lamb, but Ramsay said he was not slicing it until Dahmere had his fish up. She accused Dahmere of dropping the ball, only for Ramsay to discover that the lamb was raw. Ramsay showed the raw proteins and did not understand why the trio of herself, Leigh, and Dahmere were not performing well. When Dahmere served improper salmon, she was frazzled as no one was on the same page compared to how the red team was. Growing frustrated by the miserable night, Ramsay accused her of being on a different island.

After service, Ramsay asked the final six to name two nominees for elimination. During deliberation, Carmen admitted to the mistakes she made that night.

She was not nominated for elimination.[13]

Episode 14[]

Main article: Episode 2214 - Don't Be Fooled

After hearing about the reward for the King of the Hill Challenge, Camren thought the challenge was hers to win. During the circuit portion of the challenge, she did not care if she ran over the others’ feet. She grabbed a Dungeness Crab and found Peruvian aji Amarillo, making her excited to bring her ingredients to life. When Ramsay revealed that they had collected ingredients for someone else, she was angry because she had found her pepper paste, and Johnathan was using it. She ended up with Ryan's ingredients. During the cooking, she complained about the unoriginal ingredients Ryan had for her and felt his wife did all the shopping back home. She had no idea what to make with Ryan’s ingredients, but she decided to follow her gut. She was the third person to have her dish judged by Ramsay and felt good about her dish, telling Sammi to keep the seat warm for her. She made a pan-seared flounder with bok choy and papaya mint salsa. It had a beautiful sear on the fish, and Ramsay said it tasted good. She dethroned Sammi and proclaimed that she was not going anywhere. However, she lost the challenge after Johnathan dethroned her.

Carmen was punished by prepping coconuts and making yogurt for the beet salads. That caused her complain that she lost again after being so close. During the punishment, she said that they usually cracked coconuts with machetes in Florida, but felt it might have been a good idea not to provide them with one. Later, she said that she was not impressed with Johnathan and Ryan’s performance last night and felt she deserved to be in the final four as an equal. After Johnathan and Ryan came back from their reward, she decided to let them have their moment.

During dinner service, Carmen was at the meat station. She was the first person to run the pass, something she admitted to never doing before. Refusing to be the one leaving that night, she got the first order called out as she knew Ramsay was looking for someone with a voice. As she waited for the orders, Sous Chef Christina secretly swapped the butternut squash puree for carrot. She caught the mistake due to the darker color and felt proud she caught it. Then, Ryan brought up the carbonara, but Ramsay secretly swapped it for pappardelle. Again, she caught the sabotage and felt good she was catching every small detail that came her way. As the appetizers were sent out, Marino handed her an improperly written ticket that had three entrées on a four top. She failed to see the mistake and called the ticket out, but Ramsay told her the mistake and had Marino come to the pass. Still, she refused to let one mistake ruin her night as she hoped she did well in Ramsay’s eyes. During Ryan's turn, she served a steak that turned out to be overcooked. She promised she would get a refire in seven minutes, but Ryan told her to do it in six minutes instead. As Johnathan felt that she would not be able to catch up, Ramsay reminded the chefs to run their stations. Still, she argued that she was working meat alone but got her refire accepted.

After service, Ramsay told the final four to have a deep discussion on why they deserved to continue in the competition. During deliberation, Carmen revealed she had cooked professionally for one year after getting laid off from her corporate job and setting up her own business in her car. She said all the sacrifices she made led her to Hell’s Kitchen, and she did not want to let her family down. After everyone else revealed their stories, she said they were fighting for the American Dream in their own ways, and everyone agreed with that notion.

When the final four came downstairs, Ramsay asked them to explain why they should deserve to stay. Carmen said the hardships she faced made her resilient. She was eliminated as she was not called to be a part of the final three. Before leaving, Ramsay told her that she had bucket loads of creativity and believed that when her experience caught up, she would be the total package. Ramsay told her to reach out to him later and allowed her to keep her jacket. During her exit interview, she received a retrospective montage of her time on the show. At the end of the episode, she received the portrait burning sequence.

Ramsay's comment: "It's always difficult to let go of any chef that makes it into the final four, but Carmen's lack of experience puts her one step behind the other three great chefs I have left."[14]

Carmen was one of the seven chefs that returned for the final dinner service. She was Ryan's third pick for his brigade, after Sammi and Jason, and was followed by Sandra.[15] When Ryan went over the menu, she got confused about the Voul-la-vant dish, leaving Jason to explain it to her. Although she respected Ryan’s leadership, she got nervous due to having no experience with French cuisine.

During dinner service, Carmen was at the garnish station. She was not seen that night, and Ryan eventually won the finale over Johnathan.[16]

Quotes[]

  • (After being eliminated) "Part of me feels like I didn't lose today. I've grown a lot throughout this competition. Coming into this competition, I felt the need to prove myself. I am new and fresh in this industry, so there were a lot of obstacles coming into this competition. It's called Hell's Kitchen for a reason. It's been so many high highs and really low lows. Being knocked down so many times and just bouncing back, I definitely have a thicker skin and, you know, I believe in myself. I've made it this far for a reason. Being able to cook with Chef Ramsay, those are moments I'm gonna remember for the rest of my life. I'm walking out of here a better chef and a better person. I'm proud of myself for making it this far this early in my career path, and I know that there's a lot more to come for me."
